SOUTH PARK COALITION

September 9, 2015

Reginald Gilliand's drawl speaks to the 25 years he's spent rapping in Houston. His raspy, laid-back delivery sounds distinctively Southern - an assortment of elastic vowels and slurry consonants.

Gilliand, a Chicago native, moved here as a teen and settled in the South Park neighborhood, just outside the Loop in south-central Houston. He quickly found himself part of a coalition of hip-hop artists. The South Park Coalition was organized by Eric Kaiser, a Sterling High School classmate better known as K-Rino, a pioneer of Houston rap.

2 THE HARD WAY

(Album Release & Concert)

September 10, 2015

If it hadn’t been made clear to us yet after three solid decades of hustling and grinding, sometime around 2 a.m. on Thursday it became simply impossible to deny: the South Park Coalition will never stop. The doors to the Warehouse Live Studio room had been open since 8 p.m., and the folks who’d showed up to see Frankie J in the Ballroom next door had already long since headed home. But packed into the venue’s sweaty, concrete bowels, the sound of streetwise hip-hop was still blasting away on a weeknight.

NO MONEY

NO REASON

(Album Release & Concert)

November 22, 2014

When SPC artist Mr. CAP arrived onstage sometime after 1 a.m., anticipation was running high. There could be no doubt that Point Blank would be up next. Sure enough, with a hearty call of "South siiiide," the Blanksta hit the stage hard, towel and cigarillo in hand. Dozens of cameraphones immediately went up to capture the occasion.

NEW DOUBLE ALBUM?

(The SPC's Point Blank Has His Reasons)

November 21, 2014

South Park Coalition rapper Point Blank has done a lot in the past 25 years. He helped found Houston's first and most important hip-hop clique. He recorded landmark tracks with DJ Screw. He's shared a label with UGK, and he's toured overseas. And most impressively of all, he never stopped, never quit and never gave up on the hip-hop vision that has driven him professionally and creatively since his teens.
